A further thought.
In 'Swallows and Amazons,' Ransome says 'knitted caps'. In "Winter Holiday' he refers to 'Woollen caps' and the illustrations of the igloo and signalling to Nancy show completely different caps/berets? to, Nancy in 'Loading Captain Flint' in Swallowdale'.
I think we have been conditioned to think woollen by the film of Swallows & Amazons'.
