AR rarely dealt with the issue of "adult" legal ownership (although Captain Flint referred to even the North Pole being owned by somebody in WH). Most of the islands did belong to somebody - although I think normally to people with titles and extensive land. Quite a few islands started being handed over to the National Trust at around the time AR was writing.
I certainly didn't taken "because it belonged to us" as implying legal ownership.
