The British Agricultural History website contains an interesting essay on the role of farmers' wives from the start of the 18th century through to the mid-19th century.


Though the role of farmers' wives was changing during this perios, it was not uncommon for farmers' wives to take charge of "poultry, pigs and the whole produce of the dairy".
