I caught the Lakes Express from Euston in 1952, when the railways had not recovered from the war. We had to wait on the concourse for almost an hour after the scheduled departure time of 12.00. The train pulled into the departure platform at 1.00 give-or-take a minute.
I remember passing close to a canal just as in the film. We had eaten our sandwiches, standing waiting at Euston, but I recall the thrill of taking 'afternoon tea' in the restaurant car.
The line between Oxenholme and Windermere must have been under repair, as we seemed to crawl all the way at walking pace and i remember remarking that I could have got out, picked a daisy and got back in again!
And of course, when we arrived it was raining!
It was still raining the following morning, but what did it matter when we discovered that Rio Bay was a short walk from where we were staying? I wonder if I have ever been as happy since, as we sat in one of the green shelters on The Glebe in our wet raincoats, looking out over the grey lake with the distant shore covered in cloud.
