Reading Owen's post I found myself thinking, "Yes, I remember that."
I don't know if it was standard but we stocked both coal and coke. Coal fueled the fireplaces but the kitchen stove was heated with coke. Coke generated a clean, even, flame-less heat but would normally be available only in or near a city large enough to have a gasworks. There might also have been portable paraffin (kerosene) heaters for quick heat without lighting a fire. We had 3 kW electric heaters for that job but I gather the consensus is that Beckfoot was not electrified.
