I first came across AR with Big Six - first edition in 1940, on beautiful white paper, made by John Dickinson, it says.
After that, I got first editions of all the later books, and wartime reprints of the earlier ones, as Christmas and birthday presents, all markedly inferior paper.
But my PM, 1943, very average paper by Spalding & Hodge Ltd, carries a note on the last page: "This book is produced in complete conformity with the authorised economy standards."
