If Tadeus were sailing single-handed, as it sounds, then he would necessarily be sitting in the stern. This would help keep the narrow bow more out of the water than if there were two or more aboard -- when (a) the extra weight would be placed further forward, thus lowering the freeboard at the bow, and (b) the vessel would be that much lower in the water to start with.

Being a lighter-weight boat, and having a centreboard that could be adjusted to suit the sailing angle, I would have been very surprised to hear that Amazon was not a better sailer then Swallow.
