To pick up on Peter H's interesting post:
So far as I know R H-Ds only visited AR aboard once — On Aug 16th 1953 Lottie had moored at Emsworth in Chichester Harbour and the Rs had had their tea when he saw a boatload of people approaching in a dinghy, 'waving like lunatics' They were the H-Ds over from Bognor. He hoisted the Jolly Roger in honour of the youngest H-D's birthday. 'A very nice lad'. Mrs H-D was the most practical of the lot in the manner of ropes etc. This from AR's very detailed log. So far as I know that was it. There is no other mention, but R H-D remembered AR getting out a bottle of 'pop' marked 'Grog'!

Poor AR was in a bit of a pickle at Pin Mill. He had the wonderful Nancy Blackett to sail and Evgenia was just about refusing to ever sail with him. He was in real need of a crew. In 1936 once he had made the North Sea crossing, he had hardly sailed. Rouse, an old school friend from Rugby sailed once or twice. Otherwise Nancy lay at her mooring. Then along came the Russells . . . He had a very good reason to teach them to sail.
