The funniest things can turn out to be significantly radioactive. When I built a Geiger counter about a decade ago I scouted around for sources to test it with. I hadn't any gas mantles but a fossilized dinosaur bone did instead. My strongest available source turned out to be some powdered orange glaze I'd bought from an arts and crafts shop some 50 years ago when I was experimenting with enamelling copper. It must have been tinted with uranium so I'm glad I hadn't breathed any. (I'd built my enamelling furnace from sheet asbestos. Ah! Different days.)
