Is this because Oxford is more associated with the "literary type" and Cambridge with the scientists?
That certainly seems to be the case. When I was working out which university to apply to, to do engineering, there was no question; I applied to Cambridge. And very cold and wet it was, when we sat the exams. (In the end I went to Imperial College, but it was the '60s and I dropped out, as you did, and went on to become a film editor).
Oxford was definitely the more 'humanities' place. Anthony Powell set the first chapter of his book "Books do Furnish a Room" in a visit to Oxford immediately after the Second World War, and makes it seem deeply, deeply uninviting.
