I cannot answer your question and I am not sure anyone can.
Swallow — the real wood and copper one — always flew a rectangular flag about 14 - 16 inches on the longer side.
Coch-y-bonddhu flew a similar sized flag with a red scarab.
The large Jolly Roger flown on Nancy Blackett and others had the conventional rope, toggle and loop for hoisting.
Although I handled the flags at Abbot Hall, I do not remember how the smaller flags were flown and the photograph I took reveals no secrets. I will ask Dave T if he would be good enough to post it, so those interested can see for themselves..
For the fictional flags, see p 28 of SA and 141 of PM for the best clues, I think.
