The 1974 film 'Swallow' is 12ft long and 4ft 10" at the beam. At least a foot shorter, and presumably less beamy than the book's descriptions.
The boom has jaws for the mast, and the yard pokes in front of the mast a bit, so that makes it a standing lug. Perhaps the jaws had been nudged off when you saw the photo you refer to.
If you thought the sail small, there is a chance you're looking at the original 1974 sail, rather than the new one we had made in 2011 which was a bit larger and drove the boat better.
The old sail wouldn't have coped in a strong wind, but I'm glad we were able to get the colour and style right on the new one, so it doesn't look incongruous.
