In the UK, cormorants are great big things with a white face patch and, for some of the year, a white thigh patch (otherwise black-brown, etc.) They are seen on all coasts and also on inland waters (such as Windermere). Shags are much smaller, with no white face patch, a prominent crest (not always obvious) and a greenish sheen. They are far more restricted to rocky coasts and cliffs.
