I have always thought that in SA, 'Rio' referred to Rio de Janeiro, and was a sort of ironic-romantic name to give a small lakeside village (it was small then). 'Rio' of course means 'river', and the Rio Grande flows into the Gulf of Mexico, and is mentioned in several shanties. I have always assumed the two 'Rio' references are entirely separate, but I may be wrong.
