Interesting that in each of the four occurrences noted by Ed that it is a "young turmot" that is mentioned.

The "Vocabulary of Anglo-Manx Dialect" found at

http://www.isle-of-man.com/manxnotebook/fulltext/am1924/pt_a.htm

indicates that "turmot" is a local variation of the word "turnip". Seems to be consistent with the context in each case.
