IIRC Knight's Modern Seamanship (no relation, AFAIK to Knight of On Sailing) had the appropriate markings, which included yarn, leather, and other such bits at specified intervals, the idea being that you'd be able to tell by feel where you were on the chain. I have seen the markings published, but I'm not sure which of my fathers' and my various sailing/seamanship books had them.
