Our anchor rode (line, not chain) has bits of nylon tape (not sticky stuff, more like surveyor's tape) threaded through the strands every ten feet. Each piece has a marking on it corresponding to the depth. The tension of the twisted strands keep the tape in place. It makes it very easy to figure out how much line you have out and you don't have to keep track of how many fathoms have gone by. This may seem a bit lubberly, but it's very handy and it was how the boat was rigged when we bought it.
