No, there was no Peter Duck or Bill, so the addition of the D's would have brough the crew to the same number as before.
But that is a minor point!

Peter, I absolutely love your characterisation of Dot as introducing a 'note of satire on writing, combined with bourgeois charm' - 'bourgeois charm' evokes the villagey world of Miss Marple etc beautifully.

It's also true that her writing provides a handy way for Ransome to introduce light relief whenever necessary. If Titty had become the writer (as she seems like she's going to in the early books) it wouldn't have been nearly as funny, because Titty is so painfully sensitive that one would have felt bad about laughing at her.
