The things he does in the Racundra does not indicate shyness.
I appreciate that a novelist puts elements of their character into all characters, but John has AR's personality, not the one he wanted to project like DIck or Dot but the person he was in each and every day. He is john to a T. Racundra is a bit 2D in part. Ar created characters he wanted to be and he got better at it, but John is the closest to the boy who became AR.
