The train is the best and most appropriate way to arrive in the Lakes! However, there aren't so many trains on Saturdays and none on Sundays til late afternoon.

Once you arrive at Windermere station, you'll probably need a bus to get to your base. This is an easy transfer - buses stop right outside the station! Stagecoach run the main services, especially the 555 through the Lakes from Kendal to Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere and on to Keswick. See www.stagecoachbus.co.uk/cumbria/index_html/index_html
Click on local buses and input "555".

You can also get by train to Ulverston on a two-hourly service from Manchester, copying AR's journey as a child. Stagecoach also run buses from Ulvertson to Coniston.

Mountain Goat run many services and trips around the Lakes - see www.mountain-goat.com/ Some tie in with Windermere and Coniston steamers. They also run a minibus service to/from Manchester airport, as do others such as Airport Services, (run by my neighbour) - see www.lakeland-coaches.com/

If you need any specific help, email us local TARS!
