Could someone please bottle that essay of Ed's and include it in the next MM?
One of the wondeful side-effects of taking a long trip is that when you come home again, you are still in "tourist mode", and tend to look at the familiar as though it were new to you.
When I visited the Lake District, indeed, Britain generally, I was also stunned by the architectural use of stone, and the sheer variety of ways in which it was used. Melbourne and Los Angeles were both founded in 1835, so I found the really old things like stone circles and Pictish carvings fascinating, while my hosts could not understand my interest in them. Old houses and buildings here are too often considered as ready for the bulldozer and wrecking ball.
While travelling in France, I found being on the right hand side of the road distinctly odd.
David.
