On the origins of which side we drive on... Who decided the maritime code, ie port to port etc. does it go back to viking long boats with their steerboards being on the right/starboard side? passing boats would not be in danger of damaging each others steering 'paddles', but on the other hand the steersman would have a poorer view of the oncoming boat! I remember from my sea-cadet days learning little rhymes to remember the various manouvers. 'if on your starboard, red appear, it is your duty to keep clear'!...no the others have faded. I'll have to look them up, unless someone out there is prepared (or able!) to recall them!
