The Shrewsbury extrapolation wasn't that wild. Someone (I forget who) has calculated it by reference to train times and availability + the change at Crewe. As I remember, a plausible case was put up for Shrewsbury.
'Rugby Union' was referred to at one time as 'football'. The word still survives in the initials of many rugby clubs, ie 'RUFC' - Rugby Union Football Club.
