Shame on you all!!! The whole series BEGINS with a signal! Fathers (obscure!) telegram saying duffers will be drowned! If that particular note had been taken the wrong way, the Walkers may have been limited to the shoreline and WE ALL would have been the poorer!
As for communications a scattering of mobile phones would have made a H*** of a difference to the stories!! I can remember trying to do morse with my older brother as a boy, using a battery operated kit he'd bought in a shop and also with aldis lamps...he was mad keen on navel things at the time. But the experiments were not a success -all very confusing. Tried semaphore in the cubs and later sea-cadets, this was more succesful - but very laborious as we had to keep looking up the position in the tables!
The most succesful way I have employed these sgnals is by writing Easter-egg hunt clues out rather like Nancy's dancing savages. These were very popular, especialy with my daughter who followed me and developed a love for the books.
