Unfortunately young people do not regard school as a place where you go to learn something. They go there because the law says that they must, but there is a side benefit in that there are a lot of other people of their own age with whom they can socialise. It is basically a meeting place, with a downside that you have to actually work there. What disturbs me most is the lack of curiosity about the world. There seems to be an acceptance that everything that they need to know, and much that they have no wish to know [ie, the important bits] will be fed to them until well past the point at which they lose interest. I understand form my brother who is a teacher, that this is one of the most soul-destroying aspects of that profession. Ask any one who employs young people straight from school and they wonder what these youngsters have been doing for the past twelve years.
David.
