Have recently discovered that John Buchan's sister Anna shares my birthday (as does William Morris - hooray). Therefore embarked on a reading of all her novels (she wrote as O. Douglas) and was delighted to find how much they tell us about John and other members of the family. Memo to self: Never become a youngest son in a novel by O. Douglas. You will die during the Great War. Also, never become the second youngest son. You will die unexpectedly on your way back from India. On the other hand, if you are the heroine, you will be pretty and slim and blonde.

This led me to wonder how much Joyce Lupton's books reveal about Arthur Ransome. Does anyone know?
