I spent last evening talking about John Buchan, The Lord Tweedsmuir. He was the Commanding Officer of my Regiment during a portion of the Sicilian Campaign in 1943. From a life in the highlands, he determined that a particular hill top fortress called Assoro was scalable from the rear flank. That night the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment (from Ontario, Canada) out flanked, climbed and assaulted the German position there. It made that portion of the German defensive untenable and caused their early withdrawl from central Sicily. German records spoke of the Regiment as Monty's Mountain Goats.

In October the Dower Tweedsmuir (his Widow) and The John Buchan Society (20 or so people) will be visiting Canada. We are hosting a wine and cheese etc. Dower Tweedsmuir will be presenting original manuscripts of his war time writings along with some music that a piper wrote for him.
