I have only limited experience with the UK, but in the USA, every square inch of land is "owned" by somebody. It is interesting to read the abstract of our house and two lots. It actually traces the line of ownership back to the Northwest Ordinance of 1785 that established "not more than five states" from the territory north and west of the Ohio River. Since that time, the land has been sectioned, quartered, divided into lots, etc., and for the moment we (and the bank for four more years) possess two lots in a certain subdivision in a certain section identified by meridians, etc. All this, I suppose, allows me to tell middle school children awaiting the morning bus to "keep off the grass!"
