While the river was a major transport corridor, I wonder whether the flows were as strong given all the more modern Embankments and other engineering works which may have forced the river into a more confined channel. Old London Bridge's piers were a significant impediment to the flow which was why it was such a hazard. Also I suspect that the tides were important in planning ones trip.
