You don't get the impression from Pepys that he planned his trips to suit the tides - he went whenever he wanted to, as though he was using a taxi.

Presumably however the river was less variable and not so fast running upstream of old London Bridge which effectively acted as a weir. the bridge probably also reduced the speed of tidal flows downstream as well.

And of course the watermen knew exactly what they were doing.
