It is a curious fact that there seems to be no need to refer to most European places by their local names, but when a third-world country renames itself or one of its cities, everyone rushes to abolish the long-standing name. Thus Wien is Vienne in French and Vienna in English, Genova is Genes in French and Genoa in English, but we are now supposed to call Bombay Mumbai and Burma Myanmar. Now if we could only get the English living in London/Londres/Llundain to refer to Welshpool as Trallwng and Swansea as Abertawe.......
