I am sure it wasn't an open fire. The idea of a farmhouse kitchen containing:

(a) a range (which she must have had, in order to bake)

and

(b) an open fire, in addition, does not stand scrutiny. No rational person has two coal fires, two fires to make up, two chimneys to sweep, in one kitchen@

But an old fashioned range had a firebox with doors that could be opened, and this is what Nancy and Peggy were toasting their hoofs before
