'Howk' is Scottish in origin, meaning to dig out or to burrow, but I think the term may have spread out a bit. I seem to remember using it as a child in Cheshire. I reckon Roger picked it up either from Nancy or Peggy or maybe at school.

John Nichols may be able to supply an exhaustive (and exhausting) set of definitions, but I must go now, and howk out some anchovies from the pond for supper.
