In view of the fact that a couple of people have said slightly negative
things about Great Northern?, I'd like to support Michael Fine's praise
for it. I like it a lot.

My only problem with it is that if I try to place it in an order of
merit with the others, it is prevented from getting into the top
half of the list, not by any intrinsic failing but merely by the
phenomenal strength of the competition! For me the top six places
are inescapably pre-empted by the five lake books and WDMTGTS
(in some order, about which I can never agree even with myself),
so GN? has to make do with seventh place.

For some reason which I can't reliably analyse, the Broads books,
more especially The Big Six, come at the bottom of my personal list,
despite their totally convincing local colour and despite the fact
that in them AR addresses the criticism that he only writes about
middle-class children. Maybe I just prefer hilly landscapes to flat
ones.
