You may be right Pam. But I gained the impression that he was going to be checked out by a doctor, whether this was in hospital or elsewhere is not stated.
From the description of the return trip up river, there was a strong indication that Jim was not going to return to hospital under any circumstances even if dragged by a number of tugs.
Is there an alliterative word for a number of tugs?
