anybody else feel this way..?

Yes Steve, I did. On my first visit to the Lakes I approached Lake Windermere down the hill from Windermere town and the view seemed to take in the whole valley, it appears, in your face, and definitely not the impression one gets from the books. Also the commercialism surrounding the lake hit me in the face. I never realised it was so gross.

Coniston on the other hand appeared more like AR's lake; quiet and, apart from the incongrous effect of Gondola, unspoilt. I walked on board Gondola and experienced a definite feeling of discomfort, as if this craft didn't fit in with my idea of Ransome's lake. Although I have visited the lake on many occasions and have sailed on it in all weathers I have never set foot on Gondola since.
