I think that AR's class agenda was to show how much it didn't matter. While one can argue that the Swallows, Amazons, and D's are of a similar class/background, one can't say as much for the characters of the Broads books. The Death and Glories are clearly working class, yet they are great friends with Tom, Port and Starboar, and later, become friends with the D's.
