The Great Aunt was almost certainly based visually on Emma Holt. Emma Georgina Holt (b. 1862) was the only daughter of George Holt, the co-founder of the Lamport & Holt shipping line, and a member of the Liverpool shipping dynasty which also owned the Blue Funnel Line (the 'Blue Flue' ships, as they were known in Liverpool). She was the owner of Lanehead, at Coniston, where she allowed the Collingwoods to live rent-free. She was very gentle-natured, but Victorian in manners and appearance. She lived at Tent Lodge, at Coniston, and travelled up from Liverpool in a Daimler, driven by her chauffeur, Stanley. In earlier years she used a horse-drawn Victoria just like the one in which the dressed-up Amazons were seen by the horrified Swallows. Her Liverpool house was Sudley, at Mossley Hill - this is now open to the public and was given by the family to the City of Liverpool.

I did a long piece on Miss Holt and the G.A. for Mixed Moss in 1994, and eye-witness info on Emma Holt can be found in Pauline Marshall's Where it all Began.

As we are involved in 'class' at present elsewhere on the board, I should admit that Miss Holt was undeniably upper-middle to upper class, but if we are therefore all supposed to boo her and disapprove of her (the 'class agenda') then count me out. Emma was a delightful and generous soul, and if she hadn't 'lent' Lanehead - and Swallow - to the Collingwoods, then AR might not have met them, and, well, who knows what might, or might not, have happened.
