In New Zealand, hair pulled back into a single tie at the back of the head is called a ponytail. If then it is plaited it is called a plait. Hair pulled into two ties either side of the head are pigtails and if they are plaited - are called plaits.
Pam - I never saw French plaits until the late 70's here although whisps were made into small plaits and then incorporated is the main plait or plaits on some girls. Cornrowing was unknown here until the late 80's and tended to be reserved for frizzy hair.I've no idea whether it was similar in the UK but since I've never seen any illustrations in girl's books of either style I would guess so.
