This question is not as off-topic as it may appear. I have recently bought a GPS unit which gives latitude and longitude in degrees, minutes and decimals of minutes: 49 degrees, 12.717N; 122 degrees, 54.242W.
The older way, known to AR, would be roughly 49 degrees, 12' 42.74"N; 122 degrees, 54' 14.25"W. (The two decimal places in the seconds is a modern development and hence probably unknown to AR.) My question to anyone with a mathematical bent is how can I translate the minutes and decimals of minutes to seconds? There must be a formula to make it easy. I am asking this because when I pinpoint a spot on the ground I cannot easily compare them because my GPS unit and Google use the two different systems. My maths skills are not good enough to help me convert from one to the other. Dick would probably come up with a formula in a few seconds.
