There are ways round this. Do you read by going to Tarboard, choosing a thread title that looks interesting to you and following that? Because that works reasonably well.

Personally, I go straight to the 'most recent messages' page (which I have bookmarked), which keeps the volume manageable, and read and respond to those that interest me. But on the way I get a quick look at what everybody is chatting about. All kinds of interesting stuff turns up, unlooked for. And there's a feeling of community that I enjoy.
