Meeting the Pommern in WD is actually based on AR's own experience when he sailed Nancy Blackett across to check out the details for the story. He was coming in from the Sunk lightship at 2 25 on June 11th 1936 and took the photograph on which the picture in WD is based.

Pommern is indeed magnificent and well worth visiting - the crew are very hospitable. Getting to Mariehamn in the Aaland Islands where she was based in the 1930s and now lies is, however, a bit complicated.
