Interesting comments, Jock. I think there actually is quite a bit of "added value" in the maps (as I'll explain,) and I can't anyway complain about your comments because I didn't specifically state that it was techncial criticism I was looking for, not philosophical such....

The objective was several-fold --

1. It was to satisfy my desire to "complete the set" of maps for my own satisfaction. It may be that in this some people might liken mine to Emerson's litlle mind, subject to a foolish consistency. Everyone is entitled to his opinion.

2. I wanted to show on the maps the places and locations that were mentioned in the books but not necessarily shown on the maps provided by AR. This is important, as many such places exist. (Where, for instance, did Teasel moor when she arrived at Beccles? Where was The Wilderness? And where the "Roaring Donkey?" What about Harry Bangate's houseboat? Where was the location of No. 27 nest? While AR himself tells us, his maps don't. Mine do.)

3. As with the Lake Stories map, I wanted to combine details from both Broads books in one set of maps -- indeed, as I said earlier, even in one map as Owen at least joins me in thinking would be useful. (Geography is rather against me in this though, and I'm still thinking it through.)

It's my view that No. 2 and to some extent No. 3 provide the added value you think is lacking.

I decided to post the maps so that they could be available to other like-minded people. No-one is obliged to buy them, no-one is obliged to download them, no-one is obliged even to view them -- although I'm sure that you haven't offered your comments without at least having done that.

As far as the railway lines go, I think that Owen's comment of 24 March, and my response, make the situation pretty clear. My hesitancy in showing more detail at Yarmouth was because I did not want the maps to be inaccurate -- better to be silent than to get it wrong. However, with the help of Owen's comments I now hope to be able to show the details after all, correctly.

Life is what happens to you when your back is turned, and for the last several days I've been working (and also celebrating a daughter's birthday) interstate -- no chance even to reply to your comments until now, let alone update the maps. But as I said earlier, when it happens I'll let you know.

Oh yes, the Secret Water map. I guess you missed the thread that was the precursor to my posting that. You'll find it, and my rationale for showing the coast line the way I did, somewhere in the Archives. (If I had the reference I'd tell you, but I'm afraid I don't. It would have been some time in 2003.)

Sorry David, I only got as far south as Mornington this trip. Sorrento soon though, with any luck.

Owen, Beckfoot's plumbing will be next.... :-)
