Rugby Union football is played with fifteen people on each side. It is common usage to say that if you are on the team, you are on the fifteen (or eleven for cricket).
The autumn term was the most usual for rugby, the spring term varied, it could be (field) hockey or soccer or some other sport. Cricket was the major sport in the summer.
