I agree with you Peter 'cultural damage', or symbolic outrage is a real force, ( I've just committed a bit myself in my last post about teasing Americans). I think in ARs case for many of us the S&As are our childhood friends and we resent anything which upsets our relationship with them. Although the outrage may be real enough I'm not convinced we should indulge it. It seems to me that as grown ups we should be able to recognise that the harm is symbolic and that should help us calm down and consider the advantages of free speech, creativity etc. If someone produced a highly popular but grotesque version of S&A which assaulted us at every turn then we would indeed be recipients of 'cultural damage' but I guess that even if the musical is made and proves a great success most of us will struggle to see it, so I say 'good luck' to the makers; it might even be fun.
