I do believe, Elizabeth, that what the Swallows were referring to as 'pemmican' was in fact canned corned beef. This is a product supplied to soldiers who had no choice what they ate. It is definitely inferior to dog food, in appearance at least. I haven't eaten any dog food so cannot comment on its flavour and texture, but it wouldn't have to be very good to be better than canned corned beef. "Spam" [the canned meat, not the unwanted advertising] is a definitely superior product. [Disclaimer: the above is my opinion, not necessarily absolute fact.]
