I do believe, Elizabeth, that what the Swallows were referring to as 'pemmican' was in fact canned corned beef. This is a product supplied to soldiers who had no choice what they ate.
Corned Beef Hotpot, or more often Hash, is still a much loved camping, student and miitary meal. Quick, easy, cheap, warm and filling - needs lots of Brown Sauce and/or pickled cabbage though.
