Smoking is unpopular nowadays but I think it less damaging than walking down a city street full of mainly unnecessary vehicle fumes.

Owen - I think medical evidence, and also my own experience, is against that. I worked in London for most of my working life, in an office next to a busy traffic junction. I am still alive (I would ask you to believe ;-)), and have outlived my father's lifespan by three years already. He was a lifelong pipe and cigarette smoker, and died many years ago of emphysema in similar circumstances to John Giddy's father. Although this evidence is 'anecdotal' I believe it accords with medical theory. Nothing on earth would persuade me to smoke, having watched my father die. Yes, fumes are a menace, but smoking is a killer.
