My feeling about the GA and PM is that she was around the house most of the time, but maybe she did go out without the Amazons to visit one of her old friends occasionally.

Doesn't Nancy say somewhere that all the GA's friends have died or left the area, except Miss Thornton of Crag Gill whom the GA wants to avoid?

I've been skimming through the closing chapters of PM to find the reference, but failed.

I noticed that both Nancy and Dick express the wish that the GA had returned to Harrogate before disappearing. I'm sure the fact that she lived in that town was already well-established in AR's mind, but I also wonder if this was also a sly reference by AR to the famous disappearance of Agatha Christie from her home in 1926 - she eventually turned up in a hotel in Harrgate, having apparently lost her memory.

As for the window, I think it had been open in the day (it was August and had been 'a day of hot sunshine' (Cape hardback, p. 188, facing the burglary picture)). Maybe Nancy (without the GA's knowledge) volunteered to help Cook by closing all the windows that evening, and left that one open.
