[Veteran TarBoarders can skip this first paragraph] Since the earliest days of TarBoard, the Hobbsian Hypothesis has been fiercely debated. Proponents, including myself, have claimed that the arrangements at Beckfoot would point to an original upper class model for the household, which AR somewhat softened by deliberately giving Beckfoot a somewhat down at heel atmosphere. This claim would strengthen the case for the Crossley girls being the original inspiration for the Amazons. Others have claimed that there's nothing at Beckfoot that is incompatible with a middle class household.

The news that Jocelyn Bell has just been made a Dame of the Order of the British Empire prompted me to do a little Googling which lead me to this particular gem, courtesy of The Belfast Telegraph:

This somewhat weakens the domestic arrangements evidence for the HH. It would seem to indicate that in Northern Ireland, at least, it was possible to grow up after WWII in an upper middle class household and enjoy the same domestic arrangements as AR gave Beckfoot in 1930.

The whole article is well worth reading especially for the way Jocelyn triumphed (in a distinctly Nancy-ish manner) against a culture that discriminated against female astronomers.
